A man is now in custody after he allegedly entered a Brisbane property armed with a sledgehammer, leading to a tense, hours-long standoff with police.
On Sunday afternoon, the man allegedly entered the address in inner-city Spring Hill and threatened the residents, who were at home at the time, forcing them to flee.
Police raced to the scene, and a siege ensued, which lasted until the early hours of the morning.
A Queensland Police spokeswoman confirmed a man had been taken into custody shortly before 2am this morning, and that he was now assisting police with inquiries.
The spokeswoman also told news.com.au that nobody had been injured in the operation.
Police were initially called to a Park St address at around 3.30pm on Sunday amid reports of an armed intruder on the property.
Upon their arrival, police found the man had barricaded himself inside a room at the residence.
Brisbane Regional Duty Officer Daniel Craig earlier told the Courier Mail the man was known to police and they had been able to communicate with him during the siege.
Officer Craig previously said police were prepared to wait as long as it took to remove the man from the address.
“We’re not going to do anything reckless or dangerous to expedite that … we’ll wait,” he said.
An ambulance and fire crews were on standby on the street during the standoff, and parts of the street were blocked off as the negotiations got underway.
